A
drifter with a tragic past fetches up
on the Kansas plains and winds up
with more than he bargains for when
teaches the ropes to a young greenhorn
with attitude and attracts the attention
of a widowed ranch owner in the action-
packed 60s Western A Man Called
Gannon...
TAKING ON A YOUNG TENDERFOOT lands seasoned cowboy Gannon (Anthony Franciosa:
A Face In The Crowd) in a heap of trouble in Kansas when he comes across
brash but inexperienced young Jess Washburn (Michael Sarazzin: They Shoot
Horses, Don't They) from Philadelphia and takes him under his wing.
Gannon travels across Kansas hidden in a freight train with other drifters,
including Jess, and the two men witness a killing, which could have serious
consequences for both of them without Gannon's quick thinking.
A
very creditable
Western, well cast with
Anthony Franciosa
and Michael Sarazzin in
fine form.
A Man Called Gannon
is a memorable movie
with tetchy cowboys and
gunplay and peppered
with romance...
In
town Gannon heads for Louisa's (Eddra Gale) bordello, where he is greeted by
old friend Matty (Susan Oliver: Peyton Place), whom he knew back in Texas
and who has always had a soft spot for him. She persuades him to stay in town
and to look for work at a nearby ranch.
Jess has followed Gannon, who takes the naïve youngster under his wing and teaches
him to shoot and how to work with cattle. Together they are taken on as cowboys
by the widowed Beth (Judi West: The Fortune Cookie), who quickly sets
her sights on Gannon.
Following a run-in with Beth's surly foreman Capper (John Anderson: Psycho),
Jess leaves and throws his lot in with Ben Farlowe (Harry Basch) who, after
hearing that Beth plans to bring in thousands more cattle than her own land
can sustain, has ordered enough barbed wire to fence off vast swathes of open
range for his own herd.
The resulting range war sees Gannon and Jess on opposite sides, their loyalties
tested to the limit, in this compelling, action-packed Western from 1968.
A creditable Western, well cast with Anthony Franciosa and Michael Sarazzin
