As
a description for the film Burlesque,
nothing short of extravaganza will
do to conjure up the magic, pure
entertainment, showmanship, creativity
and visual delights that make this
movie a cut above...
AN EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY NAUGHTY MOVIE, Burlesque has what it takes to keep
you watching: a romantic storyline with characters whose lives have been a challenge
against a backdrop of entertaining and fascinating music and dance at a modern-day
burlesque nightclub.
A small town in Ohio was never going to be enough for Ali (Grammy-Winner and
Multi-platinum recording artist Christina Aguilera). Blessed with a glorious
voice, she dreams of performing on stage instead of her dead-end job in a diner.
Determined to change her luck, she takes a one-way ticket to Los Angeles and
begins to seek work as a singer. After a fruitless search, she finds herself
outside The Burlesque Lounge, home to an inspired musical revue, and is captivated
by the sexy costumes and bold choreography.
Befriended by barman Jack (Cam Gigandet: Easy A; Twilight), who is musically
gifted, Ali uses his name to get backstage to see owner and star Tess (Oscar-winning
music legend Cher: Best Actress, Moonstruck, 1988; The Witches of
Eastwick), who is not interested in taking her on as she is desperately
trying to save the business she shares with former husband Vince (Peter Gallagher).
But Ali is not about to give in and poses as a cocktail waitress, earning herself
a job on the way.
With her eyes still firmly on the stage, Ali copies the dance routines and begins
practising. She infiltrates an audition and eventually gets her wish to dance.
She is welcomed by Tess and fellow dancer Georgia (Julianne Hough: upcoming
Footloose; Television's Dancing With The Stars), but incurs the
envy of the troubled Nikki (Kristen Bell: Couples Retreat; Forgetting Sarah
Marshall), who unwittingly helps Ali rise to prominence when she tries to
sabotage her performance. Ali's spectacular voice gives The Burlesque Lounge
a new lease of life.
Ali wins the approval of sharp-witted stage manager Sean (Stanley Ticci: The
Devil Wears Prada; Julie & Julia) and gender-bender lounge host Alexis (Alan
Cumming) and while Jack cannot decide where his future lies, charismatic entrepreneur
Marcus (Eric Dane: Valentine's Day; Television's Grey's Anatomy)
sweeps Ali off her feet with a very tempting offer.
