While Sean is still languishing at the Alabama Correctional Facility, where Officer Stone (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson: Trapped) has issued a stark warning to Frank, Anna dies having made her husband promise that he and Sean will together take her ashes to be scattered on a remote lake in her native Northern Ireland, which she used to visit frequently.

Sean is released from prison, but still harbours a grudge against his father and refuses to have anything to do with him. He is desperate to make a fresh start in California and even the promise Frank makes to him, that once they have honoured his mother's last request he will pay for him to go anywhere he wants to go, falls on deaf ears.

After being turned down for a driving job that will take him to California, Sean relents and reluctantly accompanies his father on the trip, with the promise that they will never have to see each other again once Anna's wish is fulfilled.

At a bar where Anna's relatives who were unable to fly to America for the funeral are gathering, Sean meets the pretty, mysterious Jewel (Sarah Bolger: The Spiderwick Chronicles), who seems to sympathise with Frank, who is harbouring suspicions that Anna was visiting an old flame in Ireland.

Having persuaded Frank to take Jewel on part of the journey, Sean soon discovers she is not what she claims to be and the subsequent complications see a change in him. Sean becomes more amenable to the reason they are in Ireland and they search Dublin to try to track down Jewel, who has gone missing from the hotel room she persuaded Frank to pay for.

Sean and Frank are on a journey. Not just to take Anna's ashes to Ireland but also a journey of discovery. They learn things about each other that might just bring father and son closer. But will it be enough to heal the hurt to which Sean feels Frank turned a blind eye? Will Frank be able to resolve their issues and honour his wife's memory while accepting the reason Sean has not been as supportive as he could have been?
