I Am Legend
If
you believed you were
the only human left on
Earth and a sub-species
of vampires called The
Infected were thriving in
New York, would you lock
yourself in your apartment
in the middle of their
breeding ground with only
your dog for company?
STARRING THE TALENTED AND MUCH-ADMIRED WILL SMITH (I, Robot; Independence
Day) and Directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine), I Am Legend
is a post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller adapted from Richard Matheson's
highly-acclaimed novel of the same name.
The year is 2012 (interesting, this, because the Mayan calendar finishes in
2012 and we are expected to see some life-shattering changes to our lives! Click
to read a review of the book 2012). American Robert Neville (Will
Smith) is a brilliant army virologist who lives in his house in New York with
only his dog Sam for company.
He believes he is the last human survivor on Earth, following the
spread of an incurable virus the result of finding a possible cure
for cancer.
The contagious super-bug has wiped out most of the population but
a small number of survivors mutated into vampire-like creatures a breed
of vicious and bloodthirsty beings called The Infected, who only come out after
dark as they cannot bear the light.
Three years since the fall of civilisation in 2009 and the death of Neville's
wife Zoe (Salli Richardson) and daughter Marley (Will's own daughter, Willow),
Neville finds himself in a race against time to discover a cure to save what's
left of the human race by experimenting on his own immune blood to reverse the
effects of the virus. He tests the resulting vaccine on rodents and traps individuals
from The Infected to test the vaccine on them.
Neville deals with his consistent loneliness and isolation in strange ways,
while keeping his German Shepherd Dog Sam (Abbey and Kona) at his side. He puts
out desperate radio messages hoping for some human contact and dreams of his
wife and daughter.
Then The Infected begin to focus their attention on Neville in particular
a horde led by a cunning and confrontational alpha male (Dash Mihok) and alpha
female (Joanna Numata). Neville is still not getting the results he wants from
his trials, and a cure seems further away. Alone and isolated, how long can
he preserve his life and his sanity?
Is Robert Neville really alone? And is he as safe as he thinks? One day he gets
caught in a trap, ending up dangling by his ankle from a rope, unconscious and
with blood dripping from his head and it's getting dark...
Prepare for edge-of-your-seat thrills as Neville takes on The Infected on their
home ground and ends up fighting a ferocious battle to keep them out of his
home.
There are some brilliant and highly-visual shots where Robert Neville
is driving through a deserted New York chasing a herd of deer, with
his dog up front Will Smith is at his believable best as a lonely
man desperate to save his race from extinction.
