  that

CLEVERLY WORKING THE IRON MAN STORY around the hostilities in Afghanistan, this superb action film comes to DVD on 27 October (2008) with all the high-speed, high-flying exploits that made it a box office smash hit.

In Kunar Province, Afghanistan, jet-setting industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr: Zodiac, Chaplin) survives a surprise attack in enemy territory during which he is badly injured, lapses into unconsciousness and is taken prisoner.

When he comes round, he finds some sort of magnetic metal 'plug' has been put into his chest by fellow prisoner Yinsen (Shaun Toub), to prevent the remaining shrapnel in his body piercing his heart. Yinsen has removed as much as he can but some still remains.

The two men are forced to build a powerful missile for their captors — one of whom is the most famous mass murderer in the history of America — but instead of sticking to the master plans, they build a prototype all-weapons high-tech robotic suit of armour in which Stark can make his escape. In doing so, his new friend is killed and the prototype 'iron man' suit is destroyed before he is picked up by a US military helicopter.

Recovering back in America at his luxury beach house in Malibu, playboy Tony Stark has much to keep his mind off of his traumatic ordeal — after all, he is one of the world's richest men with an amazing collection of cars (including a Cobra and an Audi R8, for those who are interested) and a private plane. Horrified to witness Americans being killed by the very weapons manufactured by Stark Industries to protect them, Tony tells his right-hand man Obadiah Stane (the magnificent Jeff Bridges: The Contender) that he has decided to shut down production.

At his luxury beachside home in Malibu, California, Stark secretly builds a much more sophisticated Iron Man, little realising that he will soon meet a mighty adversary whose very being threatens the entire world.

There are only two people Stark trusts implicitly — Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Terrence Howard: Hustle And Flow) and his super-efficient aide, Deborah "Pepper" Potts (Oscar®-winner Gwyneth Paltrow: Shakespeare In Love) — but he has begun to realise that there is an enemy close at hand.

Great one-liners include Pepper Potts getting a woman with whom Stark has spent the night to leave the house with the parting shot that she does everything for Mr Stark — "including sometimes taking out the trash"!

A superhero with unique power, irresistible charm, intelligence and wit — Iron Man is a hero who is built, not born, to be unlike any other. With some very clever special effects, Iron Man is a beautifully filmed, engrossing, rip-roaring action film that deals out thrills, spills and excitement from beginning to end.
