For
a young teenaged witch the time
has come for her to leave her parents
and find a town of her own in the
delightful anime from Studio Ghibli,
the creators of Spirited Away and Ponyo. Kikis
Delivery Service follows
her
adventures as she establishes herself
and her new broomstick-powered
delivery business...
THERE IS A TIME IN EVERY YOUNG WITCH'S LIFE that they have to leave the safety
of their parents' home and make their own way in the world, finding a town of
her own to live in.
Kiki (voice of Kirsten Dunst) has reached that age and takes to the skies on
her broomstick with her little black cat Jiji (voice of Phil Hartman) and her
parents' blessing (voice of her mother is Kath Souce; her father is voiced by
Jeff Bennett).
Irresistibly
charming
and delightful,
Kikis Delivery Service
will appeal to the young
and the
young at heart...
Unfortunately,
unlike her mother, Kiki is not as adept at potions and spells or even at flying
on her broomstick, so after a shaky start she finally finds herself in a Koriko,
a fictional city based on Visby, Gotland, Sweden.
Kiki is offered a job and somewhere to live by Osono (voice of Tress MacNeille),
who owns a bakery with her husband (voice of Brad Garrett) and is expecting
their first child. From there, the young girl starts her own delivery service,
flying on her broomstick to deliver bread and cakes for Osono and branching
out to general deliveries, taking the sarcastic Jiji everywhere she goes.
She soon discovers a whole new circle of friends. Her path crosses with that
of the amiable Tombo (voice of Matthew Lawrence), a young man interested in
flying and with an ambition to build his own airborne bicycle.
After a mishap with a delivery, she meets artist Ursula (voice of Janeane Garofalo),
who lives in a house in the woods, and Madame (voice of Debbie Reynolds) and
her housekeeper Barsa (Edie McClurg).
One of the best loved animated features in Japan, Kiki's Delivery Service
was given the Walt Disney treatment in 1989 with English voices and is adapted
from the children's book by Eiko Kadono. Irresistibly charming and delightful,
Kiki's Delivery Service will appeal to the young and the young at heart.
Original Music is by Joe Hisaishi; Cinematography by Shigeo Sugimura; Writers
are Eiko Kadono (Novel) and Hayao Miyazaki (Screenplay); Producer is Toshio
Suzuki; and Director is Hayao Miyazaki.
STUDIOCANAL plans to release the entire Studio Ghibli catalogue in high-definition
