An
excellent Western starring the
superb Alan Ladd, The Proud Rebel
is the story of a fathers search to
find a cure for his son who has
witnessed an horrific incident that
has rendered him unable to speak...
AFTER THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, John Chandler (the talented Alan Ladd) travels
North in the hope that he will be able to find a doctor to treat his young son
David (Alan's own son, David Ladd), who loses the ability to speak after
he witnesses a shocking event during the war.
In the uncertain years that followed the conflict, there is still prejudice
from the North towards the South and Chandler is sentenced to a large fine or
30 days in jail when he is unjustly accused of starting a fight with the Burleigh
Brothers, who come from a powerful local ranching family. All Chandler wants
to do is to find someone who can help his son as quickly as possible but trouble
seems unavoidable.
Luckily for father and son, Linette Moore (superbly portrayed by the lovely
and double Oscar-winning actress Olivia De Havilland: Gone With The Wind),
who witnesses the fight, pays the fine in exchange for Chandler working on her
farm for thirty days but there are still two problems to overcome. Linette is
in danger of losing the farm as the Burleighs are intent on taking over her
land; and Chandler still does not have enough money to pay for a specialist
doctor to help young David.
Chandler is forced to sell David's dog Lance (played by a gorgeous dog called
King), knowing that the boy will be heartbroken. As they set off to see the
doctor, David has no idea what his father has done.
Chandler's desperate search for a cure for David has come at a price
but will his son finally be able to talk? Their future happiness depends on
David confronting his demons and his father finding a way to get Lance back
and also helping Linette to keep her home.
The film also features: Cecil Kellaway as Dr Enos Davis (Quaker); Harry Dean
Stanton as Jeb Burleigh and Tom Pittman as Tom Burleigh. Cinematography is by
Ted D McCord; Writers are James Edward Grant (Story), Lille Hayward and Joseph
Petracca; Produced by Samuel Goldwyn Jr; and Directed by Michael Curtiz who
won an Oscar for Casablanca.
