When Tu'an Gu strikes, he fulfils his plans of a military coup and orders the slaughter of the entire Zhao clan. The princess gives birth after seeing her husband slain and to save the child the court physician Cheng Ying (Award-winning actor Ge You: To Live), hides the child in his medical chest.

General Han Jue (Xiaoming Huang) is sent to fetch the child but is persuaded by Cheng Ying to allow him to take and hide the child. With the princess slain, the physician takes the child to live with him, his wife (Hai Qing) and their own newborn son.

But tragedy is to strike; and newborn boys are in terrible danger from the vengeful Tu'an Gu. Paying a dreadful price for his loyalty to the Zhao clan, Cheng Ying saves the boy at the cost of the lives of his own child and his wife.

Bringing the boy up as his beloved son under the watchful eye of Tu'an Gu, Cheng Ying waits for the day he can use the boy as a weapon against the man responsible for the loss of his family. As Tu'an Gu gradually begins to truly care for the boy, Cheng Ying will suffer further and live to regret what he has done.
