FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS the specially-built Snowpiercer train known as The Rattling Ark, the home of the survivors of the human race, has been hurtling around the Earth in a frozen landscape. It is the brainchild of Wilford (Ed Harris: Apollo 13), the driver and maintenance man known as The Keeper of the Sacred Engine.

In 2081 the world is uninhabitable, covered completely in ice due to a climate change experiment where the controversial CW7 has been dispensed. Any who have ventured outside have frozen to death.

Divided into separate locked compartments, with the privileged living in luxury at the front and the lower class in squalor at the back, the train will hold many surprises when the ones who have little finally rebel. The so-called lower classes have already suffered unspeakable hardships and they are no longer prepared to accept their lot, even though they are told they should be grateful.

Having survived on the manufactured food substitute 'protein block' given to them by the guards, they believed it was the only food available; and from time to time a child is taken away never to be seen again. The moment the guards sense any sign of dissent, they react with violence. It is a bitterly cruel existence for those who have nothing.

Led by the determined Curtis Elliott (Chris Evans: Captain America: Civil War) and supported by Gilliam (John Hurt: Alien), the poor people at the back make plans to break out of their restricted compartment and make their way to the front of the train.

Curtis releases security expert Namgoong Minsoo (Kang-ho Song: Parasite) from a self-induced narcotic coma, along with seventeen-year-old clairvoyant Yona (Ko Asung). He bribes Minsoo with the hallucinogenic Konole both Minsoo and Yona are addicted to in exchange for his help to get through the locked doors as they fight their way to the front of the train.

Encountering murderous soldiers armed with axes and equally-determined guards, presided over by the cold-hearted Minister Mason (Tilda Swinton: Dr Strange) who believes that people should know their place, the rebels have forged ahead in the mistaken belief that the guards have run out of bullets.

Each compartment is a revelation, the class divide becoming only too obvious, but many of the rebels will lose their lives as they take the train by storm. More surprises are to come as the question is finally asked: Is it possible that the outside world is now becoming habitable again?

Rather gory in places as bloody fights break out and with a number of references to cannibalism, Snowpiercer is a thrilling and compelling science fiction film that imagines an ice-bound world where few have survived the bitter cold, having no choice but to live on the only source of heat on the planet, The Rattling Ark.

Full of action spectacles and laced with plenty of biting social commentary from acclaimed director Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite; Okja; The Host), this exciting dystopian thriller rattles on to home entertainment in an extras-packed edition for fans and first-time viewers alike. A Netflix series based on the film and the original graphic novel Transperceniege has also been released this month (May 2020).
