Ten years after the advent of Terminator, a new Terminator, T-1000 (an incredible performance by Robert Patrick: Walk The Line) has been sent back in time by Skynet, the computer that controls the machines that are destroying humans in the Earth of 2029AD, to kill young John Connor (superbly played by Edward Furlong: America History X; Pecker), who will grow up to lead the resistance against the machines. But desperate humans re-programme another cyborg (wonderfully portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger: Total Recall; Predator), who is also sent back to the past but with a mission to save John Connor at any cost.

John's mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton: The Terminator; Dante's Peak) has been certified as insane as she has tried to warn the world of the impending danger from machines and, as a result, is being held in a mental institution while John is in the care of disinterested foster parents Janelle (Jenette Goldstein) and Todd Voight (Xander Berkeley).

The cyborg sent by the resistance is tasked with freeing Sarah and saving both she and her son; but Sarah is terrified of him and at first does not trust him. She is anxious that they should find gifted computer-savvy Miles Dyson (Joe Morton) and kill him as she holds him responsible for the creation of Skynet and the rise of the machines.
