Fantastic
Batman-like comic-strip
superhero and babe-magnet The Spirit
puts in his first appearance on DVD
and Blu-ray with a distinct period appeal;
putting himself in danger to fight
the
forces of evil and corruption in
a Gotham-style Central City... IMPRESSIVELY PRESENTED in comic book style, The Spirit stars
Gabriel Macht (The Good Shepherd; The Recruit) in the title role as former
rookie cop Denny Colt who returns from the dead to haunt and protect the metropolis
he loves: Central City.
Seeking to destroy an unsavoury presence in the form of his nemesis and arch-enemy
The Octopus (Samuel L Jackson: Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones; Pulp Fiction)
a megalomaniac master of disguise, who does not think twice about killing
anyone who sees his face the heroic crusader is driven by a mission to
fight the forces of evil and corruption.
The Spirit is on the trail of this cold-hearted killer who has threatened
Central City, tracking The Octopus from the city's rundown warehouses to its
damp catacombs and the windswept waterfront. Oozing an irresistible sex appeal,
The Spirit seduces or is seduced by a series of beautiful women who either
want to love him or kill him: Lorelei Rox (Jaime King: Sin City, My Bloody
Valentine); Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson: He's Just Not That Into
You; Lost In Translation); Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega: Spanglish; Talk
To Her); The Damsel In Distress (Kimberly Cox); The Female Reporter (Meeghan
Holaway); and the woman he always returns to, Dr Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson).
And as if that is not enough, The Spirit finds himself face to face with
a blast from the past in the form of the deliciously sexy former love Sand Saref
(Eva Mendes: Ghost Rider; 2 Fast 2 Furious), who may have teamed up with
The Octopus. This 'lady with a thing for the bling' holds the secret of the
Blood of Heracles that The Octopus seeks to bring him immortality in order to
rule the world.
Sand's father was shot by Denny's Uncle Pete and she now hates cops something
she has in common with the Nazi-worshipping Octopus, whose ambitions are high.
Having given The Spirit his second life, they are, in some ways, two
of a kind. But both their bodies suffer instability. All Denny had wanted to
be was a good cop, but now he haunts the shadows of Central City "The
city is a good mother," says The Spirit. "She always shows me the way."
Based on the classic 1940s newspaper cartoon strip by Will Eisner, The Spirit
is a brilliantly presented action film with a terrific sense of period in
a brooding gothic style; featuring a charismatic superhero who defies convention
and whose murder is just the beginning.
Containing additional, darker footage not shown in cinemas, The Spirit
is released on DVD and Blu-ray disc in its extended, definitive form. A stunningly
rendered and beautifully stylised comic strip action adventure featuring the
trademark colour red, The Spirit is the story of a hero born, murdered
and born again.
The Spirit also features: Louis Lombardi (Entourage; The Sopranos;
Spider Man 2) as Pathos and The Clones; Eric Balfour (Texas Chainsaw
Massacre; What Women Want) as Mahmoud; Dan Gerrity (The West Wing; Dallas)
as Detective Sussman; Dan Lauria as Commissioner Dolan; Arthur the Cat as Himself;
Johnny Simmons as young Denny; Seychelle Gabriel as Young Sand; Michael Milhoan
as Uncle Pete; David Wiegand as Officer Saref and Richard Portrow as Doremfeld.
The Screenwriter and Director is Frank Miller (Sin City; Sin City 2);
The Producer is Deborah Del Prete; and Plaster of Paris' choreographer is Joann
Jansen. The Comic Strip Creator of The Spirit is Will Eisner.
Raymond Chandler meets Marvel comics in
this charmingly evocative story; a beautifully stylised evocation of the cult
comic strip that needs to be seen on DVD and Blu-ray disc to be truly appreciated
in all its uncut glory. With a phenomenal all-star cast, The Spirit is
released on DVD and Blu-ray disc from 25 May (2009) by Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
