THROWING THEIR LOT IN WITH THE RUSSIAN MAFIA, a criminal gang have found
their alliance extremely lucrative, but now it's payback time and they are blackmailed
into planning and executing the impossible: a heist fraught with so many challenges
that the odds are stacked against its success.
Following the theft of a security box during a bank robbery by the gang in Atlanta,
Georgia, former Navy SEAL Michael Atwood (Chiwetel Ejiofor) delivers it to the
wife of the Russian Mafia boss, Irina Vlaslov (Kate Winslet), who needs the
contents to free her imprisoned husband Vassili (Igor Komar).

Irina's
sister Elena (Gal Gadot) is the mother of Michael's son Felix (Blake McLennon)
and Irina is not above using her nephew to get what she wants from Michael and
his men.
Michael's criminal activities are shared with fellow former SEAL Russell Welch
(Norman Reedus), his brother ex-cop Gabe (Aaron Paul) and corrupt cops Marcus
Belmont (Anthony Mackie) and Franco Rodriguez (Clifton Collins Jr), all of whom
are expecting a big pay-off for the job; but Irina has not finished with them
yet…
Blackmailing Michael, she wants him to break into a impenetrable, high-security
government office to steal further intelligence on Vassili. Just to show she
means business, she has Russell tortured and he is left for the others to find,
gravely injured and slowly dying = a shocking incident that leaves his brother
traumatised.
The gang realises that they need a diversion that will take the Police far away
from the scene and Marcus and Franco suggest a "Triple 9" (an officer down situation)
and put forward rookie cop Chris Allen (Casey Affleck), the nephew of seasoned
Detective Jeffrey Allen (Woody Harrelson), as the perfect victim.
Totally unaware of the fate in store for him, Chris has no idea of his fellow
Police Officers' betrayal and the lengths they are prepared to go to in order
not to fall foul of the Russian Mafia — even murdering one of their
own. Packed with double-crosses, greed and revenge, the movie puts Chris to
the fore as he proves his mettle. And he is not about to bow out gracefully.
Triple 9 is a high suspense, warp-speed action, keep-you-guessing thriller
with many twists and turns. At times shocking by nature of the content and,
despite some unnecessary violence, some gore and distasteful scenes and language,
the movie is compelling and tense.
