A
highly-respected, ethical and law-
abiding leading surgeon, desperate to
find a cure for his terminally ill wife,
discovers that there are some things
that are worth stepping over the line for
in the brand new high-concept Nordic-
noir thriller, Valkyrien...
HEARING FROM THE MEDICAL COMMITTEE that his wife Vilma (Pia Halvorsen), who
is terminally ill, is being refused further treatment and that a new, untested,
drug is too risky to use as it has never been tested on humans, doctor Ravn
Eikanger (Sven Nordin) is also denied permission to continue the experimental
research that he and his wife worked on to try to save her, as it could compromise
the entire department.
A desperate Ravn is in touch with a former patient, corrupt civil defence worker
and Doomsday-blogger Leif (Pal Sverre Valheim Hagen), who has a working knowledge
of Oslo's underground bunkers and passages and connections with the Oslo underworld,
and who may be able to offer a solution.
Valkyrien
is an exciting
and clever Norwegian
thriller series that hooks
you almost immediately
and refuses to let go.
Addictive, poignant and
wonderfully dramatic,
this is another winner for
Nordic-noir...
Leif
can get almost anything on demand and he and Ravn, who is determined to find
a cure for Vilma whatever it takes, set up an illegal clinic in an old bomb
shelter deep underground below Valkyrien Square, complete with a laboratory
so that he can continue his work in secret.
Having
moved his comatose wife into the makeshift clinic, Ravn continues to care for
her and to experiment to try to develop a cure. He will beg, borrow and steal
to get the specialist equipment he needs, while living in fear of discovery;
and has even faked Vilma's death although he feels bad about deceiving
her daughter, Siv (Ameli Isungset Agbota).
Payback time comes for Ravn with the arrival of Leif's friend, 24-year-old Teodor
"Teo" Naustvik (Mikkel Bratt Silset), who has been shot by the police and seriously
injured while taking part in a robbery. Bleeding badly, Teodor is taken to the
clinic where Ravn agrees to operate on him.
Teodor accidentally ran over a policeman while escaping with a great deal of
money from the robbery. He wants to help his wife Marit (Gine Cornelia Pedersen),
even though he realises that he cannot contact her. But his presence is not
the only threat to Ravn's secret. Leif has a policeman friend who is becoming
curious, and Leif has also been told by his superiors to show some students
around the apparently deserted tunnels.
Another doctor, Unn (Ellen Birgitte Winther), a close friend of Vilma and Ravn,
finally agrees to help at the clinic and Ravn falls in with Leif's ideas for
helping poor people, criminals who need to avoid the authorities or people who
have simply run out of options.
While Ravn forges ahead with his research, working against the clock to find
the miracle cure he is sure will save his wife, Leif believes that time is running
out for the world and posts his reasons on the Internet for the end of civilisation
as we know it…
