Do
parents really know whats
best for
their
children? A gutsy teenager ispushed
into the world of beauty
pageants by her mother but discovers
her true ambition at the local rough-
and-tumble female roller derby league
in the funny and wholesome chick-
flick Whip It...
WHILE HER OVER-BEARING MOTHER Brooke Cavandar (Marcia Gay Harden: Mona
Lisa Smile; Mystic River) dreams of bright lights and grooms her 17-year-old
indie-rock fan daughter Bliss (Ellen Page: Juno; X-Men 3: The Last Stand)
for success at an endless line of beauty pageants, she cannot know she is in
for a shock in the teenage sports movie Whip It
Bliss has found her passion at the local roller-derby.
Unfortunately for best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat), who works with her at the
nearby diner, she becomes sidelined as Bliss starts to find her own place in
the world. Indulging her obsession for the roller-derby, she joins the Girl
Scouts team run by coach Razor (Andrew Wilson), giving her age as 21.
Under her stage name 'Babe Ruthless', small-town-girl Bliss finds herself surrounded
by caring team-mates and battling rivals that include Smashley Simpson (Drew
Barrymore: Charlie's Angels; He's Just Not That Into You; Music And Lyrics),
Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wrig), Iron Mayan (Juliette Lewis: The Switch; Starsky
And Hutch), Bloody Holly (Zoë Bell), Eva Destruction (Ari Graynor) and The
Manson Sisters (Rachel Piplica and Kristen Adolfi). She also meets Oliver (Landon
Pigg), who plays in his brother's band and with whom she falls in love.
But for how much longer will Bliss deceive her parents and hide her true age
from her new friends? Can she heal the rift with Pash and find herself? And
will Oliver remain faithful to her while he is on tour with the band?
