A
charming and visually fascinating
offering from the esteemed Studio Ghibli
and scripted by the legendary animator
Hayao Miyazaki, Whisper Of The Heart
follows the life of schoolgirl Suzuku
as she strives to follow her dreams and
falls in love along the way...
SUZUKU TSUKISHIMA DREAMS of becoming a writer. With her mother busy with
an intensive summer course and her father working hard as a librarian, Suzuku
does not get too much hassle from her parents about her schoolwork in the delightful
Studio Ghibli animé Whisper Of The Heart.
Nearing the end of her time at Junior High, Suzuku loves reading and when she
takes out a number of books from the school library, she is amazed to find out
that another student has taken out the same books before her. Time after time
she finds his name and she becomes intrigued by Seiji.
When she leaves her book on the seat she and her friend Yuko have been sharing,
she returns to find a boy reading the lyrics she has written to John Denver's
Country Roads, which she had folded up safely inside. He mocks her and she is
infuriated by him. But their paths are destined to cross again.
On the train one day on her way to deliver her father's lunch to the library,
Suzuku sees a large cat and follows it to an antique shop, where she strikes
up a conversation with a kindly, elderly gentleman about The Baron; a fascinating
and very handsome cat statuette with glittering eyes.
Suzuku is surprised to meet Seiji again and the two become closer, despite her
frustration with him. He shows her the violins he has carved, telling her of
his ambition to make violins in Cremona, Italy. Thus inspired by his utter determination
to follow his dream, Suzuku puts all her energies into weaving a romantic story
around The Baron coming to life.
Whisper Of The Heart delivers a message to follow your dreams and never
let anything stand in the way. The story within a story is enchanting and the
film exudes warmth and character.
